This is the preliminary information that we know at this time.   This information can change as the investigation progresses.

Around 4 p.m., Tampa Police dispatch received a 911 call from a witness who was following two suspects in two cars and involved in some type of altercation.   This was in the area of N. 30th St. and East 109th Avenue. The witness told officers they drove to the back of the parking lot at the Hyatt, 11111 North 30th Street.  As officers arrived, there was some sort of gunfire exchange.  The Tampa Police officer was shot and the two suspects were shot.   The officer was taken to Tampa General Hospital Trauma Alert.  One suspect was taken to a hospital and the other is deceased on scene.   At this point,  it appears the officer shot will survive and his bulletproof vest may have saved his life.  We do not have a condition update on the second suspect at this time.  Detectives are working to determine the details of the gun fire exchange and the timeline of events.  Once the officer's family has been notified we will release his name.  In addition, when next of kin is notified on the deceased suspect, we will released his name.
