Tampa Police officers arrested a suspect in the overnight hit and run that resulted in a shooting.  After a thorough investigation, officers charged Keevon Smith with leaving the scene of a crash and attempting to run over a man with his Ford Explorer.

At approximately 1:15 a.m., Smith drove through a parking lot inside the Broadmoor Apartments.  He struck Tyrone Walker's blue Ford Fusion on the right rear side and fled the scene. Walker got inside of another vehicle and followed the Ford Explorer south on North 50th Street.  He confronted Smith when he stopped his Explorer in the roadway.  Smith tried to hit the victim with his SUV, while Walker was attempting to exchange information with him.  Walker, who has a concealed weapons permit, shot at Smith while he was running out of the moving vehicle’s way in order to defend himself.

Smith was shot in the leg.  He drove to the corner of 49th Street and Diana Street and contacted law enforcement for help. During the investigation, officers determined that Smith was the suspect in the hit and run crash. He was transported to booking without incident after being released from the hospital.

Detectives are actively working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if charges are appropriate against Walker or if he was acting in self-defense.
