The inaugural Matilda Garcia Leadership Award will be presented at the 16th Annual Latinos Unidos luncheon, a milestone for all Tampa Bay Hispanics to be proud of as the proceeds from this event will go towards funding the City of Tampa Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council scholarship programs at various institutions in Tampa including University of Tampa, University of South Florida, and Hillsborough Community College. This year's keynote speaker is Mr. Alex Sanchez, the first Hispanic to become President and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association. The luncheon will take place at Noon on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Tampa Convention Center in downtown Tampa. It is open to the media.

Mr. Martinez-Ybor is currently retired after 50 years of work in the banking industry. His most recent position was Sr. Vice President of International Banking for the Bank of Tampa, which he held for 10 Years. He began his banking career in 1952 in Havana, Cuba and upon his return to Tampa in 1972 has had great devotion to community service in Tampa. Rafael has constantly worked to preserve the history, culture and architecture of the community planted by his great-grandfather, Vicente Martinez-Ybor over 100 years ago. His devotion to our Hispanic history and heritage, especially to the memory of his great-grandfather, has brought recognition throughout the community by groups such as the Rotary Club of Ybor City, Tampa Bay History Center, and the Ybor City Museum Society. Although retired from banking, after 50 years of service, he has continued to spearhead international commerce in Tampa and spread goodwill among the foreign visitors to our community.
