DATE:             Saturday, June 27, 2015

LOCATION:  River Tower Park, 401 East Bird Street, Tampa

TIME:            8 a.m – 4 p.m. Anonymous, No Questions Asked Buyback Takes Place

9 a.m.  Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Chief Eric Ward will join officers at the buy-back site.

During the event, citizens within Hillsborough County can anonymously turn in shotguns, assault rifles and handguns for $50 cash at River Tower Park.  The guns must be functional.  Pellet guns, starter pistols, flare guns, BB guns and antiques will not be eligible for the cash exchange.

The buyback program was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation.  The professional hockey team contributed $50,000 to help police keep guns out of the wrong hands.  Coca-Cola Beverages Florida is also showing its support of the Tampa Department’s efforts to combat crime.  The beverage company is providing refreshing beverages for the daylong event.

Police officers will be stationed at the site to safely take possession of the firearms from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mobile teams will be available during that time to pickup guns from citizens who cannot transport them to the buyback location.  Those citizens can call the police department at 813-231-6130 to schedule a pickup.

Citizens who bring guns to the buyback are reminded to store the unloaded firearm(s) in a plastic bag and place it in the trunk of their car.  They should also follow these firearm safety tips:

  • Treat every firearm as is it were loaded
  • Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
  • Never handle a gun you are not familiar with
  • Always keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to fire the weapon
