Tampa Leads State in Municipal Equality Index ?? Score jumps from 66 to 89 in Annual Human Rights Campaign Report
The Human Rights Campaign's annual Municipal Equality Index ranks Tampa as the most pro-equality big city in the state of Florida.
"Tampa has a longstanding tradition of inclusiveness. Our progress on equality issues is not just symbolic -- it is tangible, particularly for 500 couples who have signed up for the Domestic Partnership Registry," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Diversity is a pre-requisite for creativity and innovation, and by extension our economic competitiveness. It is as simple as they say, 'equality means business.'"
In one year, Tampa's score jumped from 66 points, when we ranked third in the state of Florida, on the index to 89 points and first in the state of Florida on the index. The city's overall rating improved in the municipality as law enforcement category as well as local leadership’s public position and policy efforts on equality categories.
In total, 293 cities nationwide, including 15 big cities in Florida, were evaluated for the index.
