Details: Tampa Police officers were dispatched to a fight between two females at the Interstate Lounge at 9403 Nebraska Avenue. When they arrived, both women were gone and the officers learned one of the females left the scene in a 2002, white Pontiac Grand Am. The officer and several witnesses saw the Grand Am heading north on Nebraska Avenue when it suddenly accelerated, swerved off the road and drove onto the sidewalk trying to run over two male pedestrians. The passenger in the vehicle and the two men on foot were yelling at each other as one of them jumped out of the way and the other was knocked to the ground. The suspect vehicle then made a U-turn on Nebraska Av enue and fled southbound. The officer also made a U-turn and was attempting to catch up with the suspect vehicle. The driver ran the red light at Busch Boulevard and then turned off her headlights and began to drive at a high rate of speed. She lost control of the car just south of Hillsborough Avenue and crashed into a pole at East Frierson Avenue. The driver was ejected and died at the scene. The passenger suffered a broken leg and was transported to Tampa General Hospital in stable condition. The officer was still north of Hillsborough Avenue when the crashed occurred. He arrived at the scene and attempted to help the driver and passenger until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived. The two pedestrians were not injured. Nebraska Avenue between Hillsborough Avenue and Shadowlawn Avenue will remain closed throughout morning rush hour while officers investigate the crash.
