DETAILS: Through extensive interviews and the forensic analysis, detectives identified David Williams as a person of interest within the first two weeks of the investigation. Over the next year, detectives made progress on the case, but did not have enough evidence for an arrest. As the one year anniversary approached, the law firm of Winters and Yonker put up a $50,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of a suspect. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office posted flyers about the reward in the Orient Road and Faulkenburg Road Jails asking inmates to call Crime Stoppers with information about the case. At the same time, Clear Channel Outdoor donated billboard space to help generate tips throughout the Bay Area. These community efforts brought in more useful information that helped detectives narrow the focus of their investigation. Tips from the jail played a critical role in helping solve the case. The reward was valid for one year and then would become a donation to the Ryan P. McCall Memorial Foundation to fund scholarships for Track or Cross Country runners at any university in the State of Florida. On the two-year anniversary of the murder, McCall's family decided to extend the reward for another six months.
On 5/23/12, detectives traveled to the South Florida Reception Center where Williams was serving a prison sentence for a strong arm robbery and two home burglaries that Williams committed just days after McCall's murder. During the interview with Detectives Sal Augeri and Chuck Massucci, Williams admitted that he confronted McCall and another victim at the base of the North Boulevard Bridge. He admitted hitting the second victim, Harahan, in the head with his firearm and robbing him of the cell phone and a wallet. He also admitted going through both victim's pockets. Williams claimed that a second suspect shot and killed Ryan McCall. Detectives do not have any independent evidence that a second suspect was involved in the crime, but it's still an active investigation. Williams will be transported to Tampa in the near future to face Felony First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery and Attempted Armed Robbery charges.
