In the wake of recent shootings in Ybor City, the Tampa Police Department has reached out to business owners to proactively prevent crime in the entertainment district. The program will increase communication between law enforcement and business owners; enhance security through heightened awareness; and maintain a safe shopping and working environment. The newly created program comes complete with a business watch sticker for each participating business, which was designed by a local Ybor City artist and funded by YCDC. Each sticker will have a serial number that will provide quick contact information to responding law enforcement.
Officer Sean Mahabir will train all participating businesses with a crime prevention class. This will allow
business owners to network and work together as the eyes and ears of the community. Businesses experience more nighttime burglaries than homes and are the sole target of shoplifters. This program helps combat those trends.
