Tampa, FL (September 14, 2018) — Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan paid a surprise visit to four local non-profit organizations to bring them some good news and to help invest in their programs on September 14. It was all part of the police department’s inaugural Community Investment Grant initiative that was announced during the summer.
2018 Grant Recipients:
Abe Brown Ministries—funding will be applied to the Ready4Work program, which helps ex-offenders make a successful transition into the workforce and community.
Academy Prep of Tampa—funding will help the school provide disadvantaged students with the resources they need to excel on the SAT test, which will help open more doors for them academically.
Current of Tampa Bay—funding will help support the organization’s Laundry Project, which provides free laundry services for residents in challenged neighborhoods.
Friends of the Library—funding will go toward tutoring and educational resources for kids who attend the Seminole Heights Branch Library, which serves as a safe haven for students after school and during the summer.
The police department utilized seized drug money and criminal contraband to fund the Community Investment Grant initiative.
Chief Dugan shared, “we’re taking bad money and making it good by investing in organizations that are working to make a positive difference in our community every day.”
The grant recipients were selected from a pool of more than two dozen applicants.
In order to qualify for a Community Investment Grant, organizations were required to meet certain criteria such as an active tax exempt status. Its programs must also be aligned with the police department’s mission to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life through a cooperative partnership with all citizens.
The next application period for the Community Investment Grant will be announced in June 2019.
