Tampa Police Investigate Homicide of Woman Killed by Stray Bullet

WHAT: A Tampa woman was killed Thursday night when she was struck by a stray bullet.


WHEN: The shooting occurred Thursday night at approximately 9:45 p.m.


WHERE: Jefferson St. N/Columbus Dr. E


WHO: Maria J. Rivera-Contreras, 57, of 2807 Jefferson St. N (Deceased)


DETAILS: A group of youths were engaged in an ongoing dispute Thursday night. A teen who apparently was involved in the dispute was riding his bicycle along Columbus Drive. A shot was fired that apparently was intended to strike the youth on the bike.


Ms. Rivera-Contreras was in the area inside a vehicle with family members after delivering food to a friend or family member on Columbus Drive.  As the family car was backing out to proceed onto Columbus Drive, a stray bullet struck Ms. Rivera-Contreras. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. (A photograph of Ms. Rivera-Contreras is attached.)


No arrest has been made in this case.
