Tampa Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting Suspect on supervised prison release for 2nd degree murder

Suspect: Edward Thomas, 10/3/1986, B/M, 3713 East 38th Avenue, Tampa
WHERE: 6900 Coolidge Avenue, Tampa
Details: An officer was conducting a traffic stop on the suspect's vehicle at 11:40 p.m. around Hillsborough Avenue and Armenia for an expired tag and seatbelt violation. The suspect fled from the traffic stop. The officer called in the fleeing vehicle, but did not follow. A Tampa Police helicopter was in the air and followed the vehicle from the air. The Dodge Challenger crashed into the traffic sign at Coolidge Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. The suspect fled the vehicle and ran into the woods. Officers set up a perimeter and a K-9 was deployed into the woods. The suspect exited the wooded area and the officer told him to stop and show his hands. He failed to comply with the officer's commands and the officer saw what he thought was a weapon, so in fear of his life, he shot the suspect. The suspect was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he is expected to survive. After he was shot, he stated that he didn't want to go back to prison. He is on supervised release from prison for a 2nd degree murder conviction out of Plant City.
