Tampa Police detectives are investigating to determine if four suspects who were taken into custody after a pursuit are part of a recent increase in auto thefts and auto burglaries in the South Tampa area.  Officers investigated approximately nine stolen vehicle cases in South Tampa since the beginning of the year.  All of the vehicles were unlocked.  In several of the stolen vehicles a key, valet key or proximity key was also left inside the car.  Officers recovered five of the stolen vehicles in St. Petersburg.  Tampa Police urge citizens to lock their car doors and avoid leaving keys inside.

On January 22, Tampa Police officers responded to 2618 West Sunset Drive to investigate an auto burglary. While units were enroute, the victim provided a suspect vehicle description of a dark 4 door vehicle traveling east on Sunset Drive.  The first officer arrived on scene, confirmed an auto burglary occurred, and provided an updated suspect vehicle description of a dark or maroon 4 door vehicle following a second suspect vehicle.  Another officer observed the suspect vehicles traveling east on Swann Avenue from Rome Avenue. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle at Bayshore Boulevard and Channelside Drive. The vehicles fled and a pursuit was initiated. Two officers pursued the vehicles to Adamo Drive where the vehicles continued eastbound.  The driver of the maroon Lexus drove over the railroad tracks just west of 34th Street and lost control of the car.  The vehicle drove off the road and crashed into a bulldozer parked on the side of the road. Officers took Raemon Poole into custody.  He was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.  Poole suffered a broken leg and wrist in the crash and was transported to Tampa General Hospital.

Officers continued the pursuit of the second vehicle, a Jeep Liberty.   As the vehicle passed 50th Street, they performed a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing Jeep.   The vehicle went through the median and crashed on the north side of Adamo Drive. Officers took the driver of the vehicle, Roderick Webb, into custody.  Webb complained of pain and was transported to Tampa General Hospital for evaluation. Herbert Jones and Clifford Washington were passengers in the second vehicle.  Officers transported them to District One for interviews.

During the investigation, detectives contacted the owner of the maroon Lexus and confirmed that it was stolen from 3420 West Palmira Avenue overnight.   The Jeep Liberty was reported stolen in St. Petersburg.

All four suspects may face additional charges pending the outcome of this ongoing investigation.
