"Implementing bike share is a big step towards Tampa becoming the city we want to be – a city where it is not only safe, but encouraged for people to walk and bike. We’re proud to be one of the first cities to launch a large scale, 4th generation bike share program," said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "We’ve been looking forward to getting the bikes rolling out on the streets, and I know Tampanians are just as excited as I am."
The bikes, designed by NYC based Social Bicycles, are 3-speed step-through style bicycles equipped with GPS technology that allows the user to easily locate the bicycles from a mobile app as well as track their mileage, carbon offset and gas savings. Tampa will be among the first large scale implementation of this new 4th generation bike share technology which also allows users to lock the bike to public bike racks in addition to Coast hubs.
“Social Bicycles is excited to work with the City and CycleHop to bring our technology to Tampa. Coast will be part of a growing network of Social Bicycles programs found in large cities, universities, and corporate campuses. We hope Coast will be a fast and convenient way to explore downtown by bike.” said Social Bicycles CEO Ryan Rzepecki.
Benefits of a founding membership include 90 minutes of daily ride time, a free helmet and early access to the bikes. Starting December 7, 2014, daily, monthly and annual memberships will be available for purchase and will include 60 minutes of daily ride time.
Memberships can be purchased at CoastBikeShare.com.
