Temporary Lane Closures of Channelside Drive and S Beneficial Drive to begin May 26, 2020 for Road Construction

A portion of Channelside Drive between Water Street (formerly Old Water Street) and S Beneficial Drive and  S Beneficial Drive between Knights Run Avenue and Channelside Drive will close on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 for road construction.  A private contractor is making modification to existing concrete medians on the southwest corner of Channelside Drive and S Beneficial Drive and on the center median on S Beneficial Drive south of Channelside Drive.  The work will be completed in three (3) phases. 


During phase 1, the eastbound lane on Channelside Drive between Water Street and S Beneficial Drive will close at 9 am on May 26, 2020.   One (1) eastbound lane on Channelside Drive between Water Street and S Beneficial Drive will be maintained during construction, with delays.


Phase 2 will begin immediately following the completion of phase 1 construction.  During phase 2 the eastbound thru lane on Channelside Drive between Water Street and S Beneficial Drive will reopen to traffic.  The right turn movement from Channelside Drive to S Beneficial Drive will be prohibited during this phase.  Motorists wanting to access Harbour Island using the Beneficial bridge will need to access from the north on S Meridian Avenue or from the east on Channelside Drive. 


During phase 3, one (1) northbound lane on S Beneficial Drive between Knights Run Avenue and Channelside Drive will close as the contractor makes modifications to the center median on S Beneficial Drive.  One (1) northbound lane on S Beneficial Drive between Knights Run Avenue and Channelside Drive will be maintained at all times during construction, with delays.  All lanes on Channelside Drive between Water Street and S Beneficial Drive will be reopen to traffic during this phase.


Sidewalks in the work area will be closed during construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained via signage to other sidewalks in the area at all times.


It is anticipated that all lanes on Channelside Drive and S Beneficial Drive will be open to traffic by 4 pm on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, weather permitting.


The City recommends using alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.
