Temporary Road Closures on N 34th Street and E Osborne Avenue to begin July 6, 2020 for Road Construction

A portion of N 34th Street between E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and E Hillsborough Avenue and E Osborne Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street will close beginning on Monday, July 6, 2020 for road construction.  A City contractor will replace sidewalks, upgrade pedestrian ramps, add bicycle lanes/share the road pavement markings and repave N 34th Street between E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and E Hillsborough Avenue as part of the 2nd phase of the 34th Street Safety Improvement project.  The Safety Improvement project includes the construction of three (3) roundabouts on N 34th Street at the intersections of E 21st Avenue, E Lake Avenue and E Osborne Avenue.  The entire Safety Improvement project is being constructed in 3 phases.

 

Phase 1 includes the construction of two (2) roundabouts on N 34th Street at the intersections of E 21st Avenue and E Lake Avenue.  The roundabout at E 21st Avenue is expected to be completed on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. The roundabout at E Lake Avenue is scheduled to be completed by Monday, July 20, 2020. 

During Phase 2, the contractor will construct the new roundabout at the N 34th Street intersection of E Osborne Ave.  N 34th Street between Lila Street and E Louisiana Avenue and E Osborne Avenue between N 32nd Street and N 35th Street, will close at 9 am on Monday, July 6, 2020.  Phase 2 is expected to be completed in three (3) months. 

The Phase 3 work will begin upon the completion of the Phase 2 construction.  During Phase 3, the contractor will mill and overlay N 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Hillsborough Avenue. 

The sidewalks within the work area for each phase will be closed during construction.  Pedestrian access will be maintained via signage to other sidewalks in the area at all times.

The entire project is expected to be completed in late fall of 2020.

The City recommends using alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion. 

During the remainder of Phase 1, northbound and southbound motorists can use N 22nd Street or N 40th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in lieu of N 34th Street.  Northbound and southbound trucks should use N Nebraska Avenue or N 40th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in lieu of N 34th Street. Eastbound and westbound motorists can use E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or E Columbus Drive/E 19th Avenue/E 18th Avenue/E 17th Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street in lieu of E Lake Avenue. 

During Phase 2, northbound and southbound motorists can use N 22nd Street or N 40th Street between E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and E Hillsborough Avenue in lieu of N 34th Street.  Northbound and southbound trucks should use N Nebraska Avenue or N 40th Street between E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and E Hillsborough Avenue in lieu of N 34th Street. Eastbound and westbound motorists can use E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or E Hillsborough Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street in lieu of E Osbourne Avenue.
