Temporary Road Closures on N 34th Street, E 21st Avenue, E Lake Avenue and E Osborne Avenue to begin March 2, 2020 for Road Construction

A portion of N 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Hillsborough Avenue, E 21st Avenue between N 21st Street/N 22nd Street and N 40th Street, E Lake Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street and E Osborne Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street will close beginning on Monday, March 2, 2020 for road construction.  A City contractor will replace sidewalks, upgrade pedestrian ramps, add bicycle lanes/share the road pavement markings and repave 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Hillsborough Avenue as part of the 34th Street Safety Improvement project.  The Safety Improvement project includes the construction of three (3) roundabouts on N 34th Street at the intersections of E 21st Avenue, E Lake Avenue and E Osborne Avenue.  The Safety Improvement project will be constructed in multiple phases.

In Phase 1, the contractor will construct two (2) roundabouts on N 34th Street at the intersections of 21st Avenue and E Lake Avenue.  N 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E 23rd Avenue, E 21st Avenue between 33rd Street and 35th Street and E Lake Avenue between 33rd Street and 35th Street, will close at 9 am beginning on March 2, 2020.


Phase 1 is expected to take four (4) months to complete.  All lanes on N 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and 21st Avenue and Lake Avenue between 33rd Street and 35th Street are scheduled to be open to traffic by 4 pm on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, weather permitting.

The Phase 2 work will begin upon the completion of the Phase 1 construction.  During Phase 2, the contractor will construct a new roundabout at the intersection of E Osborne Ave.  N 34th Street between E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and E Hillsborough Avenue and E Osborne Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street, is tentatively scheduled for closure in early July 2020.  Phase 2 is expected to take three (3) months to complete.

The Phase 3 work will begin upon the completion of the Phase 2 construction.  During Phase 3, the contractor will mill and overlay N 34th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Hillsborough Avenue. 

The sidewalks within the work area for each phase will be closed during construction.  Pedestrian access will be maintained via signage to other sidewalks in the area at all times.

The entire project is expected to be completed in late fall of 2020.

The City recommends using alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion. 

During Phase 1, northbound and southbound motorists can use N 22nd Street or N 40th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in lieu of N 34th Street.  Northbound and southbound trucks should use N Nebraska Avenue or N 40th Street between E Columbus Drive/E 18th Avenue and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in lieu of N 34th Street. Eastbound and westbound motorists can use E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or E Columbus Drive/E 19th Avenue/E 18th Avenue/E 17th Avenue between N 22nd Street and N 40th Street in lieu of E 21st Street or E Lake Avenue.
