ARREST DATE: 8/16/2011, 7:10 p.m.
Tampa Police officers received a tip at 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday 8/16/11 that an expelled Freedom High School student was planning to discharge explosive devices on campus to cause casualties. Officers learned the violence was planned for the first day of school and it targeted specific administrators as well as any students nearby. Through their investigation, officers determined the suspect had very specific plans for carrying out the violence. At approximately 6:30 p.m. the suspect’s mother consented to a search of their home. During the search, officers found materials used to construct pipe bombs; including a fuel source, shrapnel, plastic tubing, timing and fusing devices. Members of the Tampa Police Department’s Regional Bomb Team determined the quantity of materials seized was capable of taking multiple lives.
Officers also seized a journal that contained a minute-by-minute plan of carrying out the violence. It also included schematic drawings of rooms inside Freedom High School and disturbing statements about his intent to kill. The suspect was also found to be cultivating marijuana in his room. He was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center without incident. The State Attorney’s Office will determine if the suspect will be charged as an adult.
