The Tampa Police Department is in mourning after learning that Officer Howard Gimbel has died from injuries sustained in an off-duty motorcycle crash earlier today. Officer Gimbel, who has been with TPD for 20 years, served on the Department's motorcycle unit. He was 52 years old.

Officer Gimbel's wife, Tonya, also was involved in the crash. She was taken to a local hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

"This is a tragic day for our Department and for our City; everyone is feeling the loss," said TPD Chief Eric Ward, who rushed to the hospital upon learning of the traffic crash. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gimbel family. I want them to know they will always be a part of the Tampa Police Department family."

Chief Ward thanked the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for their sensitive handling of the tragedy. HCSO continues to investigate the crash.
