Involved Officer: 35 year old Shannon Murphy, W/M - 9 years as a Tampa Police Officer
Officers were dispatched to Central Court Apartments, 2510 Central Avenue at 7:21 p.m. for someone actively shooting a weapon in the street near the complex. When officers arrived, they immediately spotted an individual matching the suspect's description. As the two Officers approached him, he began to walk away from them. The officers gave him the order to stop, but he began running towards the courtyard. The suspect ran up an outdoor staircase. As he was running up the stairs, the officers could see him pulling something out of his pant leg. The officers were giving him orders to stop and show his hands. When he reached the third floor, he turned toward the officers armed with a pistol grip assault style shotgun. The officers gave commands to drop the weapon. When he didn't comply, they were in fear for the lives and fired at the suspect in self-defense. The suspect was shot at least once and transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died from his injuries. Officers recovered the suspect's loaded shotgun. The Tampa Police Department Internal Affairs Bureau and the Homicide Shoot Team, along with the State Attorney's Office are on scene conducting a thorough investigation.
The two involved officers will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation as is standard procedure with a police involved shooting.
