A preliminary finding from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner has determined the victim's injuries are not consistent with a hit and run crash. The Tampa Police Department is waiting for the results of the autopsy and a final ruling from the M.E. to determine if the case is a homicide.
Detectives Seeking Help From the Public in Fatal Hit and Run
Tampa, FL October 17, 2011 -
DATE/TIME: 10/16/2011 5:40 p.m.
LOCATION: Waters Avenue West and Ashley Street North
VICTIM: Michael M. Swanson, W/M, 02/06/1956, 202 101st Avenue West, Tampa
VEHICLE: Red four-door sedan, possibly an early 2000s model. It may have a cracked front light and a small amount of silver transfer paint on the front bumper.
DETAILS: The victim was riding his bicycle southbound across West Waters Avenue and crossed into the eastbound lanes. The vehicle hit or grazed the victim on his bike. The victim fell to the ground, but got up and pushed his bike out of the road. Once he was on the side of the road he collapsed. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The suspect fled the scene east on West Waters Avenue and then turned north on Florida Avenue. Detectives are looking for any information on the vehicle. It is possible that the driver was not aware that he hit the bicyclist.
