Water Department Issues Statement to Channel 8

The Tampa Water Department has a responsibility to rate payers and bond holders to charge customers for the water they use. If the Water Department makes an error that results in an incorrect bill, the error is corrected and the customer’s account is adjusted. If there is documentation that a leak on the customer’s side of the meter could have caused an abnormally high bill, the amount of water used above average over the most recent 14 month period is billed at the lowest tier rate. In the situation where there is no indication of an error by the Water Department or a leak on the customer’s side of the meter, the assumption is that the meter accurately recorded the amount of water that was used and the customer is expected to pay for that amount.

Please note that the usage in October 2008 to January 2009 is consistent with their usage for the same period in October 2010 to January 2011. The fact that their usage in the most recent time period is slightly higher than in October 2008 to January 2009 can be attributed to the more severe drought conditions we experienced and the opportunity to water twice a week during the October 2010 to January 2011 time period.
