Wrong Way Driver Charged with DUI

The suspect crashed into a Tampa Police Officer


DATE/TIME:            October 5, 2014 at 3:43 a.m. 

LOCATION:             North Armenia Avenue and I-275 

VICTIM:                   Tampa Police Officer Natasha Stanek 

SUSPECT:               Hilary Whittle, DOB: 6/22/1990, W/F 


The wrong-way driver who crashed into a Tampa Police officer is facing a DUI charge.  On October 5, 2014, Hilary Kay Whittle was driving north in the southbound lanes of Armenia Avenue when she struck Officer Natasha Stanek’s marked TPD cruiser shortly before 4 a.m..  Officer Stanek was on her way home from finishing her shift in South Tampa when the Mazda slammed into the side of her police cruiser.  Paramedics transported Officer Stanek and Whittle to Tampa General Hospital.  They were both treated for minor injuries and released later the same day. 

As part of the investigation, Tampa Police detectives conferred with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if Whittle would be charged with causing the crash.  On November 25, 2014, the State filed  DUI charges against Whittle.  A blood test that was submitted to FDLE indicated that Whittle’s blood alcohol content was:  0.228 / 0.229 during the wrong-way crash.
