Shared Electric Scooter Pilot Program

The City of Tampa has engaged four of the nation’s largest shared motorized scooter vendors to support a year-long pilot program.  The motorized scooters will allow people to quickly and easily move themselves short distances and help commuters access public transit stops that are several miles away. These vehicles can replace short-distance car rides, which would help to reduce traffic levels and improve downtown mobility.

The objective of the shared motorized scooter pilot program is to introduce a new, low-cost method of transportation to enhance mobility and address the “last-mile” needs of downtown Tampa.  The pilot will help the City gather data necessary to develop a multi-faceted, long-term mobility plan that satisfies the community’s needs and encourages strong public-private partners.

How do I rent a scooter?

Riders can rent a scooter using the following steps: 

  • Download the app from the App Store, Google Play, or the vendor’s website.
  • Create an account in the app using your email address.
  • Use the app to scan the QR code on the scooter to find, unlock and activate a scooter. Once the scooter unlocks and activates, your trip has started!
  • When you’re done, park responsibly and end the trip in the app. 

NOTE: You may also lock the device so other users cannot ride it, but you will continue to incur charges. This is useful if you're just running inside a store or making some other quick stop.

Do I need a driver's license or safety equipment to rent a motorized scooter in the City?

Scooter operators within the City of Tampa must be 16 years or older and are required to have a valid driver’s license or permit.  Helmet wearing is encouraged, but not required.

Where can I ride the scooter?

The current boundaries are shown on this map and listed below:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on the North
  • Davis and Harbor Islands on the South
  • Armenia Avenue on the West
  • 40th Street on the East

Where is riding prohibited?

Scooters shall not be ridden in the following locations:

  • Tampa Riverwalk
  • Bayshore Boulevard
  • 7th Avenue

What are the rules for riding motorized scooters in Tampa?

Motorized scooter users must: 

  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian and give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian
  • Not carry passengers (only one person may occupy a motorized scooter at a time)
  • Helmet-wearing is encouraged, but not required
  • Not operate a scooter while under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Where can I leave my scooter when I'm done riding?

When you finish your ride, make sure to park courteously, which means scooters should:

  • Be placed in designated corrals whenever possible
  • Be parked upright when parked on sidewalks
  • Never be parked on private property
  • Maintain a minimum four-foot pedestrian path on sidewalks

Make sure to NEVER block:

  • Sidewalks
  • Fire hydrants
  • Curb ramps
  • Parking spaces
  • Handicap accessible areas (ramps, parking spots, etc.)
  • Street furniture such as benches, trash cans and parking meters
  • Business or residential entryways

I see an incorrectly parked scooter. Who should I call?

If you see a fallen scooter or bicycle, be a good neighbor and upright it, if able. If it is an emergency, call 911. If it is not an emergency, please contact the customer service number provided on the scooter or report to the City of Tampa by calling 1-877-SCTR-HLP.

How fast do the scooters go and how long will they run?

On average, the scooters can travel at speeds up to about 15 mph and operate between 15 to 20 miles on a single charge.

How do I report a problem or a concern?

Questions and concerns about scooter services, operations or parking should be directed to the customer service department of the respective vendor.

I found a broken scooter. Who should I call?

Please contact the customer service number provided on the bike or scooter.

I saw an accident involving a scooter. Who should I call?

If it is an emergency, please call 911. If it is not an emergency, please call the Tampa Police Department non-emergency number at 813-231-6130 or the main number at 813-276-3200.
