The Tampa Police Memorial Committee is proud to announce the 2020 Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship Program. The Tampa Police Memorial Committee recognizes the importance of a good education for students entering college. In order to assist students in their endeavor, the Tampa Police Memorial Committee will be offering ten $1,500.00 college scholarships to the children of both active and retired police officers and civilian employees of the Tampa Police Department. In addition, the children of sworn Tampa Police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty or the children of sworn officers who suffered a non-line of duty death while currently employed with the Tampa Police Department are also eligible for the scholarship program.
Proceeds from the annual Tampa Police Memorial 5K run/walk and donations from the United Way, on behalf of the Tampa Police Memorial Committee, have made it possible to fund this scholarship program. Without those proceeds and contributions, we could not have made these scholarships available to the children of Tampa Police Department Employees.
Attached you will find the rules and regulations for this year's scholarship program. Please read them carefully as changes have been made. The application process for this year's scholarship program will begin on April 1, 2020. All applications must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2020, in order to qualify. Winners will be announced by July 10, 2020, a notification will be by email. An awards ceremony will be held on July 29, 2020, at Police Headquarters.
NOTE: Recipients are awarded the Tampa Police Scholarship ONE time only. Previous recipients may not apply. Previous applicants who were not awarded a scholarship are encouraged to apply again. Rules and Regulations
The rules for the 2020 scholarship program have changed, please read and follow the instructions carefully. Applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2020. Applicants and Parents are not permitted to hand-carry or send applications through inter-office mail or to any other address other than the P.O. Box. This is to ensure all applications are received on time.
- The Top Ten Qualifying Applicants will each be awarded a $1,500.00 scholarship, payable directly to their college or university.
- Applicants will only be awarded the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship once, after being awarded the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship the recipient is no longer eligible to apply. Previous applicants who were not awarded a scholarship may apply again.
- The applicant must be accepted or enrolled in a college or university recognized by the current issue of Accredited Institutions. This will not and does not limit the applicant to Florida schools only.
- The applicant must be a full time student and carry a minimum course load equivalent to 12 credit hours per semester.
- The winning scholarship award will be made out to the recipient's college or university in the name of the recipient. The scholarship is non-renewable and not transferable.
- All payments are final once the winning scholarship award is accepted by the recipient's college or university registrar's/bursar's office and credited towards the recipient's financial account. Should the recipient withdraw from the college or university, the total amount of unused funds will be returned to the Tampa Police Memorial Fund, Inc. The Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship Committee will not oversee the transfer of scholarship monies from one college or university to another.
The applicant must be the biological or adopted child, step-child (dependent child of current legal/lawfully wed spouse of the officer or employee), or a child under the legal guardianship (must be court-ordered) of an active or retired police officer or civilian employee of the Tampa Police Department, child of a sworn officer, whose life was lost in the line of duty, child of a sworn officer who suffered a non-line of duty death if the officer was currently employed with the Tampa Police Department at the time of his/her death. Grandchildren of employees do not qualify unless the employee has court documentation showing the employee is the legal guardian or adoptive parent of that child. Children of retired employees: the employee must have received a disability or longevity retirement from the City of Tampa.
- Children of employees that have severed employment ties with the Tampa Police Department for reasons other than stated above are not eligible.
- Bonus points will be awarded to qualifying children with learning disabilities. The Scholarship Committee will determine if the applicant qualifies for bonus points given to children with learning disabilities. Those children enrolled in the public school system, with "IEP's" will automatically qualify for bonus points. Children who were Home-Schooled or attended a Private School will be required to submit appropriate paperwork documenting the learning disability to qualify for bonus points provide this documentation.
- Bonus points, which will be a maximum of two (2) points, will be added to the applicant's total final score.
Applicants must have received a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for the current year in which they are applying for the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship.
An official transcript must be submitted from the current or most recent college, university or high school attended by the applicant. Transcripts must be included with the application or mailed directly to the P.O. Box. Transcripts must be sealed and not opened.
Transcripts from high school applicants must be their final high school transcript and include their final grade point average, weighted or un-weighted, along with the applicant's class rank. Applicants currently enrolled in a college or university must send their current transcript from their college or university, high school transcripts will not be accepted.
College or university transcripts must reflect the applicant’s current grade point average.
An acceptance letter from the college or university the applicant will be attending is required. If the applicant will be attending a community college, please submit a receipt of application or registration. For applicants currently enrolled in an approved college or university, a transcript will suffice.
Applicant Process and Essay Rules
Applicants must include a cover letter in letter format, stating who they are and how they qualify (to include parent’s name and association with the Tampa Police Department for the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship. The cover letter must also include the name of the college or university the student plans on attending along with the address where scholarship monies should be sent, usually this is the office of the registrar or bursar. Applicants are responsible for providing the location where scholarship monies will be sent; failure to do so will delay or forfeit scholarship awards. The cover letter must include the applicant’s current address, e-mail, address, and phone number. Applications must be postmarked or completed in full, on or before the due date. Applications postmarked after the due date and incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications will not be accepted without a postmark, this means the parents may not hand carry them to the President of the Tampa Police Memorial Fund Committee, Inc.
Applicants must write an autobiographical essay, which will include educational goals, documentation of hours of community volunteer work completed, extra- curricular activities completed in high school and/or college, and career aspirations.
The essay will be not less than 500 words, typed and double-spaced. The essay will be graded on content, spelling, and grammar.
Letters of Recommendation
The applicant must obtain and submit two (2) letters of recommendation from a person in the community other than family members. The letters of recommendation will be mailed to the President of the Tampa Police Memorial Fund Committee, Inc. Failure to obtain letters of recommendation will result in a deduction of points from the overall grading scale.
Each application will be scored as indicated below when determining the recipients of the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship. The Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship Committee will tabulate the final scores of each applicant with the Tampa Police Memorial Scholarship Grading Scale. The six (6) areas of grading and their weighted percentages are as follows;
- Applicant's Grade or Credits Earned - 35%
- Grade Point Average - 30%
- Curriculum - 5%
- Community Service - 5%
- Extra-curricular Activities - 5%
- Essay - 20%
Scholarship Program Applications should include the following:
- Cover Letter
- Autobiographical Essay
- Official Sealed Transcript(s)
- (2) Letters of Recommendation
- Documentation of Community Service (this can be included in the student’s essay or documented in the student’s transcript)
- Admission or Acceptance letter to Accredited College or University unless already enrolled in college
These items may be mailed separately or all together in one envelope. Please do not place applications in sleeved folders or type essays on colored paper. Photos of students are not required.
