Assistant Chief of Police
Assistant Chief Elias “Eli” Vazquez joined the Tampa Police Department in 1994. Prior to working for TPD, Vazquez served four years in the United States Marine Corps and six years as an officer in Garden Grove, just outside Los Angeles. After working the LA riots, he decided it was time to move to Florida.
Since joining TPD, he has served in all three police districts. He worked in an undercover capacity as an officer, detective and sergeant. His experience as a plain-clothed officer ranges from working street level investigations to complex, long term operations in the department’s Narcotics Bureau and Gang Suppression Unit. Vazquez also played an integral part in strengthening the department’s relationship with the Hispanic community. As the department’s Hispanic Liaison, Vazquez worked closely with Hispanic media outlets and residents to ensure the lines of communication with the department stayed open.
In March 2016, Vazquez was appointed as the Major in charge of District 1 and in December 2017 he was promoted to Assistant Chief.
He is a proud graduate of Saint Leo University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.
