Detective Chevis, age 51, actually was shot 11 years earlier during a pistol battle on the front porch of his home at 1307 New Orleans Avenue.

Fred Neal, his three sons and several other suspected auto thieves went to the officer's home about 7:30 p.m. on November 07, 1927. During the altercation, Neal fired a .45 caliber split lead bullet through Detective Chevis' right side, hitting his lung and exiting through his neck. The officer returned fire and wounded Neal.

Neal died days later. Detective Chevis returned to the force, but ultimately died from hypertension and complications from the wound on April 07, 1938.
