Gasparilla Distance Classic Races Through Tampa

The Publix Gasparilla Distance classic is racing through Tampa this weekend, with an estimated 30,000 runners warming up to cross the finish line. This annual tradition features a variety of races including a 5k, 15k, half marathon, and other activities, in addition to the Health & Fitness Expo this Friday at the Tampa Convention Center.

The WFLA 8 On Your Side Health & Fitness Expo is FREE and open to the public. In addition to late registration and packet pickup, attendees will be able to shop the latest in fitness apparel, meet industry experts, and learn about the latest medical advancements in the field.

EXPO HOURS

The expo will be open  Friday, February 22nd from 10am-8pm and Saturday, February 23rd from 6am-5pm in our East Hall.

TRANSPORTATION AND TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Traffic is expected to be heavier than normal this weekend in and around downtown Tampa due to the Gasparilla Distance Classic road races. Drivers and pedestrians alike are advised to allow for extra travel time and to travel through the area with caution.

Shuttle Service: A FREE shuttle will be operating from the Royal Regional Parking lot to the Tampa Convention Center on Friday, Feb 22nd starting at 4:30pm.

The Tampa Streetcar also offers free transportation in Tampa’s Downtown, the Channel District, and Ybor City with service every 15 minutes. Dick Greco Plaza Station is located just outside our building. For more information, visit www.tecolinestreetcar.org.

Street Closures: There will be several road closures on Saturday and Sunday due to the races.

On Saturday, street closures will start around 3:00am and end around 1:00pm.

On Sunday, closures will begin at 3am and end around 11:30am.

The following City of Tampa parking garages will be open Saturday, February 23rd at 5:00 a.m.:

  • Fort Brooke Garage, 107 N Franklin St.
  • TCC Garage, 333 S Franklin St.
  • South Regional Garage, 301 Channelside Dr.
  • Whiting St. Garage, 400 E Whiting St.

The following City of Tampa parking garages will be open Sunday, February 24th at 4:30 a.m.:

  • Fort Brooke Garage, 107 N Franklin St.
  • TCC Garage, 333 S Franklin St.
  • South Regional Garage, 301 Channelside Dr.
