Tampa, FL—This week the Hillsborough County Planning Commission and the Tampa’s Downtown Partnership are hosting their annual Commuter Challenge—a week long initiative that challenges locals to find alternative methods of transportation to their cars. This initiative is designed to minimize traffic congestion while encouraging more energy efficient transportation habits.

As one of the top transportation junctions in Tampa’s Downtown, the Tampa Convention Center is home to several transportation alternatives that make it easy for visitors to travel without a car. Below are a list of transportation alternatives that offer waypoints at the Tampa Convention Center.

TECO Line Streetcar

The TECO Line Streetcar System, also referred to as the Tampa Steetcar, has a stop located just across from the Tampa Convention Center (directly behind The Sail) at Dick Greco Plaza. The Streetcar offers 11 stations throughout downtown, the Channel District and Ybor City.

Rates for the Streetcar are as follows:

  • FREE on Saturdays
  • One-way fare: $2.50
  • Discounted fair (for seniors 65 or over, youths 17 or younger, and those with disabilities or medicare): $1.25
  • 1-day unlimited rides card: $5.00
  • Family All Day Ticket (valid for 2 adults and 3 children, or 1 adult and 4 children): $12.50

Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Vending Machines (TVM) located at each streetcar station, at select retail locations, or through the Flamingo Fares App.

Coast Bike Share

Coast Bike Share offers a fun, health, and energy-efficient way to explore the city. With bike racks located throughout Tampa’s Downtown, riders can easily check out a bike in one location and drop it off somewhere else.

For those traveling to and from the Tampa Convention Center, there is a Coast Bike rack conveniently located just outside our Franklin Street Entrance. After reserving a bike through the app, you can conveniently unlock it from the rack using a designated pin number.

Rates for Coast Bikes are as follows:

  • Pay as you go: $8/hour
  • Monthly: $15/month (includes 1 hour per day)
  • Annual pass: $79/year (includes 1 hour per day)

Pirate Water Taxi

The Pirate Water Taxi’s home base is at the Tampa Convention Center boating docks, located right in front of The Sail.

The Pirate Water Taxi allows riders to hop on and off all day at various stops along the Tampa Riverwalk. This connects visitors to some of the top tourist hotspots in Tampa’s downtown, including The Straz Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Bay History Center, Channelside, and more.

Rates for the Streetcar are as follows:

  • All Day Pass: $20/adult $10/child
  • After 6pm Pass: $15/adult $5/child
  • Two-Day Passes: $25/adult $12/child
  • Annual passes: starting at $99

Tampa Riverwalk

In addition to other transit options, visitors can also reach several walkable attractions by foot thanks to our location along the Tampa Riverwalk. 2.6 miles long, the Tampa Riverwalk is a waterfront path that connects the Tampa Convention Center to other major hotspots in Tampa’s Downtown, including The Sail, The Tampa Bay History Center, Amalie Arena, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Glazer Children’s Museum, the Tampa Museum of Art, The Straz Center, Ulele and Waterworks Park, and more.

In addition, the Riverwalk itself is one of Tampa’s signature structures, featuring beautiful canopies and waterfront vistas.
