Tampa, FL—Busy times lie ahead for the Convention Center district, with two major events taking place the weekend of January 27th.
One of Tampa’s most celebrated traditions, the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, attracts tourists from across the nation to join the third largest parade in the United States. This Saturday, January 20th, the pirate fun begins with the Children’s Gasparilla Extravaganza & Parade along Bayshore Boulevard. However, the main kick-off event of the season, the Gasparilla Invasion, will take place January 27th just outside the Tampa Convention Center.
Each year, the Tampa Convention Center is recognized as a premium viewing area for the Gasparilla Invasion—a spectacular event where the Jose Gasparilla and a fleet of other pirate ships sail north across Hillsborough Bay and into Seddon Channel before docking at the Convention Center. An Invasion Brunch will be served from 9:30am-1pm at the Tampa Convention Center for those who purchase reserved tickets, giving attendees the unique opportunity to witness the invasion from the city’s best vantage point.
Following the invasion, the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates takes place from 2-5:30 pm along Bayshore Boulevard. This parade will feature unique floats, beads, enthusiastic pirates, and other merriment, as the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla celebrates their takeover of the City of Tampa.
The same weekend, Tampa will also play host to the National Hockey League All-Star Game, shining an international spotlight on Tampa with a weekend packed with activities. Starting with the NHL Friday Night Concert, January 26th, Indie Pop band Fitz and the Tantrums will headline a free show in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Other activities include an official Pre-Game fan festival, a red-carpet meet & greet, and mascot showdowns, all leading up to the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, January 28th, at Amalie Arena.
Between Gasparilla and the NHL All-Star Weekend, there is no shortage of activities for the week ahead. Those who will be visiting downtown Tampa are advised to expect heavy traffic and several road closures as a result of the parade routes. Before attending these events, the city encourages all to visit tampagov.net/Gasparilla for the latest information.
