Mayor Iorio joined Forest Hills Elementary School students as part of the Great American Teach-In. Fifth graders asked the mayor questions and got a lesson on setting goals. The mayor also visited Ms. Aviles' and Ms. Hunter's Pre-K classes and read "Who Ate All the Cookie Dough?" to the students. The Great American Teach-In celebrates American Education Week, and invites community members into the classroom to teach children about their jobs and lives

Local businessman and philanthropist Ray Murray celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends at Higgins Hall. The mayor was on hand to congratulate Mr. Murray and present him with a birthday letter. Ray Murray and his wife, Nancy, have dedicated their lives to the preservation of the arts and many other causes in the Tampa community.

Walkers and volunteers gathered outside of Raymond James Stadium to take part in the 2009 Tampa Bay Start! Heart Walk. The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. This year over 1,000,000 walkers will participate in more than 500 events across the country, raising funds to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers - heart disease and stroke. |

A graduation ceremony was held for Tampa Fire Rescue’s recent recruit class. Over 100 friends and family members joined Mayor Iorio and Chief Jones at the Tampa Firefighters Museum to congratulate the newest members of Tampa Fire Rescue team.

A Community Covenant signing ceremony in support of the U.S. armed forces took place at the Tampa Bay History Center. Tampa, a city and community that values its relationship with MacDill Air Force Base and local service members, is further demonstrating its support of the military and military families by signing the Community Covenant. The Covenant provides an opportunity for local communities to validate its support of the members of the armed forces and their families. |

Metropolitan Ministries marked the start of its annual holiday-giving efforts with a tent blessing ceremony. This holiday season, over 29,000 families are expected to request assistance from Metropolitan Ministries. For over 35 years, the organization has provided meals, shelter, outreach services, and hope for a better future to those in need in our community. |

The Red Cross Angels held their Annual Silver Coffee fund-raising event to benefit the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people to prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Founded in 1981, the Red Cross Angels have over 170 members and have raised more than $1 million to support families in crisis. |

The Tampa Museum of Art (TMA) held its "Evening in the Park" fundraiser at Plant Park, overlooking the new museum that is scheduled to open in February 2010. The event included dining, live music, and dancing under the stars. The new TMA will provide the region with a variety of world-class traveling exhibitions, a growing collection of contemporary and classical art, expanded education programs, and scenic outdoor events along the Tampa Riverwalk. |

Ronald McDonald was just one of the hundreds of walkers that joined Mayor Iorio at Rowlett Park for Walking with the Mayor - Keeping Tampa Fit . Now in its fifth year, the three-mile walk is a health initiative sponsored by the City of Tampa and open to walkers of all ages and abilities. |

The Division of Geriatric Medicine at the USF College of Medicine held its 3rd Annual Fundraiser and Gala, Celebrating Life - Flamenco Style. Proceeds from the event benefit the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. Though medical science has advanced treatment for age-related diseases, there is a shortage of geriatricians in the health care workforce. Currently, there is only one geriatric specialist for every 2,500 Americans over age 75. |

The 46th Annual Tony Jannus Award was presented to U.S. Rep. James L. Oberstar, Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The award is presented by the Tony Jannus Distinguished Aviation Society annually and recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to scheduled commercial aviation. In 1914, Tony Jannus piloted the first commercial airline flight, which took place between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida. |

The Chiselers, one of the oldest preservation groups in the country, held a 50th Anniversary Tea. The organization is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the historic 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, a symbol of Tampa and a National Historic Landmark. The Chiselers have over 300 members and have raised nearly $4 million since their inception in 1959. This once luxurious 500-room hotel, erected by Henry B. Plant in 1891, was purchased in 1904 by the City of Tampa and today is known as the Henry B. Plant Hall at the prestigious University of Tampa. |

The Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) held its 1st Annual Aviation Summit at the Tampa Convention Center. The three-day event features new experiences, education, and opportunities to touch, test, and interact with the people and technology relevant to flying. AOPA was founded in 1939 and is the largest aviation organization in the world with a membership of more than 414,000. |

Mayor Iorio was a guest speaker at the Hillsborough County Hotel & Motel Association’s (HCHMA) Annual Meeting and Luncheon. First organized in 1937, the HCHMA is a membership-based organization that represents leading local hotels, motels and resorts. These accommodations generate more than 90 percent of the total hotel revenue generated in Hillsborough County. |

The Week of the Family organization helps strengthen families through relationship building, education, wholesome activities, fitness and community service. |
