The Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII) sorority held its 50th Biennial International Convention at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina. AOII was founded in 1897 by four women at Barnard College and has since brought together more than 140,000 members for the purpose of fellowship, leadership and community service. Among their many charitable efforts, the Tampa, Greater Pinellas and Sarasota alumnae chapters conduct annual fundraising efforts to support local and national arthritis activities and research. |

The Westshore Alliance sponsored the Leadership Westshore Graduation Luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. Thirty top professionals participate annually in the program, which is designed to prepare them for significant leadership roles within the community. The Westshore Alliance, an organization with a membership that includes over 400 businesses, focuses its efforts on crime prevention, education, marketing, beautification, transportation and improving the working environment in the Westshore District. |

Tampa was the host city for the All-America City Award Ceremony. The award, started in 1949, recognizes communities of all sizes for solving critical local issues through cooperative partnerships with government, businesses, nonprofits and community members. This year Tampa was a finalist and had previously won the award in 1990. |

The Tampa All-American City delegation made its presentation to the National Civic League's jury at the Tampa Marriott Waterside. The delegation included Middleton High School's drumline and numerous community leaders. The presentation showcased the East Tampa, 40th Street and Sulphur Springs initiatives. |

The 60th Annual All-America City Award , sponsored by the National Civic League, was held in Tampa. Additionally, Tampa was a finalist for the award this year and a delegation of almost 100 people came together to get ready for the final presentation themed the Power of One. Mayor Iorio spoke with Tampa's delegation after their rehearsal and thanked them for volunteering their time and effort. |

The Tampa Downtown Partnership held their 23rd annual meeting and luncheon at the Tampa Convention Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Dan Biederman, a nationally recognized expert in the field of urban space management. During the meeting, Keith Greminger was named the Partnership’s chair for 2009-2010. The Tampa Downtown Partnership works with the public and private sectors to encourage downtown development and to pursue support services and amenities to accommodate new residents, businesses and visitors. |

Governor Charlie Christ signed House Bill 57 into law. The new law expands the current battery on a law enforcement officer statute to include police explorers on patrol. Sponsored by State Representative Betty Reed and Senator Tony Hill, the bill was drafted by Tampa Police Major Sophie Teague.

Mayor Iorio joined Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Dennis Jones to officially welcome and swear in Tampa’s ten newest firefighters. The ceremony, held at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, was attended by more than 100 friends and family members. The new firefighters will be assigned to fire stations throughout the city. |

The Tampa Bay Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) held their monthly business meeting at the Dr. Blaise F. Alfano Conference Center in Tampa. The discussion focused on Tampa’s transportation initiatives as well as mass transit. The local section of ASHE has over 120 active members who are dedicated to advancing the transportation needs of the Tampa Bay Area.

The Florida Planning and Zoning Association (FPZA) held their annual conference at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Tampa. The theme to this year’s conference was Urban Places/Rural Spaces: Planning for Tomorrow. The FPZA, Florida’s oldest planning organization, is a statewide nonprofit comprised of people dedicated to planning and developing a quality Florida. The FPZA is comprised of nearly 1,000 people and organizations. |

The Fifth Third Bank branch office in East Tampa held their official ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication alongside community leaders and local residents. The branch, located at 2615 E. Hillsborough Avenue, is the first commercial bank to open in East Tampa.

Fourteen year-old Alina Meador of Brandon Academy was recognized for her participation in the 2009 Scripts National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. Alina was awarded a seat at the national contest after winning the regional Tampa Bay Area Spelling Bee in early 2009. Only 293 spellers qualify to participate in the Scripts National Spelling Bee, the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion.

Community leaders joined representatives from the University of South Florida for a farewell reception honoring Betty Castor. Castor is stepping down as the Executive Director of the Patel Center for Global Solutions. The Center, launched by USF two years prior to Castor’s appointment in 2007, works to identify challenges in developing countries and create solutions that improve their quality of the life. |
