City of Tampa Kicking Off Soulwalk Community Cookbook

The City of Tampa is announcing its latest Soulwalk initiative, the Soulwalk Community Cookbook, with a launch event and call for recipes.

The city is seeking community participants to submit recipes, snippets of memories, and profiles of people and businesses that have shaped the local African American community.

Earlier this year, Mayor Jane Castor launched the Soulwalk, an art and heritage trail that connects the city’s historic sites and tells the rich story of Tampa’s Black communities. Organized by the City of Tampa Arts & Cultural Affairs Division, Soulwalk spans approximately 46 miles and 25 neighborhoods. It includes nearly 100 stops that residents and visitors can explore, including public art installations, historical landmarks, museums, cemeteries, and more, and can be accessed by walking, biking, or driving.

Like the historic trail, the Soulwalk Community Cookbook will showcase the journey and rich history of Tampa’s black residents, organizing family recipes into one cohesive keepsake.

A community “call for recipes” will be announced on Monday, September 25, at a press event happening at the Epicurean Kitchen Theatre. The event will feature a cooking demonstration and tasting of African American cuisine from notable local chefs.

“This is a dynamic opportunity for the Tampa Bay community to come together to learn about and preserve the rich and diverse history of our city,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “This cookbook will reflect Tampa’s Black heritage through family recipes and stories, flavorful ingredients, cultural traditions, and demonstrate how cooking influences community. We invite everyone to be a part of the making of the Soulwalk Community Cookbook.”

Media outlets planning to attend are asked to RSVP by emailing media@tampagov.net
