With water usage in the City of Tampa continuing to rise and reach record levels, the Water Department is encouraging Tampa customers to participate in the "Imagine a Day Without Water" challenge. On average, Tampa customers use more than 100 gallons of water every day to drink, clean, as well as keep their households and businesses running. Over the last fiscal year, the Tampa Water Department produced and distributed an average of 82.7 million gallons a day (MGD) to our entire service area, compared to an average of 79.9 MGD last fiscal year. To raise awareness of the importance of water conservation and the value of water, the City of Tampa is participating in the nationwide October 19 is “Imagine a Day without Water." On this Day of Action, the Tampa Water Department is urging customers to “Take 10.”"By saving just 10 gallons of water a day, each member of our community would make a profound impact on our efforts to save water as a city," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Water is our most valuable and indispensable resource and each of us is responsible for protecting it." Simple Ways to Reduce Water Usage:
- Limit your showers to 5 minutes.
- Reduce your irrigation by 5 minutes for each zone. Tampa households are limited to irrigating only twice a week on designated days.
- Wash full loads of laundry instead of multiple loads for only a few items.
- Sweep your porch and walkways instead of using a hose to clean them.
Excessive irrigation is one of the leading water usage problems and in many cases accounts to up to 50% of a household's water use. The Tampa Water Department reminds customers irrigation is not allowed on Sundays and each household must follow the City’s Water Restriction Rules by irrigating only on its designated days.
In an effort to help our community conserve, the Tampa Water Department offers free water-saving devices, information, and workshops to Tampa customers who are looking to save water and save money.
