One of Tampa's most iconic landmarks, the River Park Tower in Sulphur Springs, is being refurbished for the first time since 1989. Standing more than 200 ft. high, and carrying a near 100-year-old history, the interior and exterior of the structure will be cleaned and repainted. Located at 8105 North Florida Avenue, the former water tower was built in 1927 with a tank that could hold 150,000 gallons and served as the principal water source for the area until the 1970s. Constructed by developer Josiah Richardson, the tower is only one of two architecturally-designed water towers in Florida."Preserving and protecting our rich history is just as important as paving the way for our future," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Our landmarks serve as a reminder of the contributions of the generations before us who helped build our incredible city and we must do what we can to continue to honor and pass down this history. Sulphur Springs' beloved River Park Tower has stood strong for nearly 100 years and it's our responsibility to ensure it continues to do so." The $309,175 contract to refurbish River Park Tower was awarded to Kimszal Contracting, Inc. The scope of work includes pressure washing, painting, and the replacement of lights at the top of the tower. The work is expected to be completed over the next six weeks, weather permitting.
