Street Renaming Ceremony to Honor James "Jim" Urbanski, Former President of Tampa Tribune

The City of Tampa is pleased to announce a special event honoring the legacy of James "Jim" Urbanski, former president of the Tampa Tribune newspaper and a lifetime civic leader. A street renaming ceremony, led by City Councilman Guido Maniscalco, will take place on March 22, 2024, at 2:00 PM at 202 Parker Street, near the site of the former Tampa Tribune building. Mr. Urbanski, who passed away on April 16, 2021, at the age of 93, worked with the Tampa Tribune for over three decades, during which he held the position of president and general manager. In addition to his professional achievements, his numerous civic contributions included serving as CEO of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Straz Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Director of the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), President of the Florida State Fair Authority, President of the United Way of Greater Tampa Bay, and Director of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, to name a few. Mr. Urbanski was the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award and 1989 Civitan Tampa’s Citizen of the Year Award. He was an avid booster of making Tampa “America’s Next Great City. Speakers at the street renaming ceremony will include Mayor Jane Castor, Councilman Maniscalco, friends and members of the Urbanski family. Following the street sign unveiling, there will be a prayer with the family. Members of the media are invited to attend the ceremony, which will offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the life and contributions of a beloved figure in Tampa's history.
