On Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 10:50 p.m., officers responded to the 3700 block of Busch Boulevard in reference to the report of an armed subject firing shots from a gray Kia Soul.

Between 10:53 p.m. and 10:55 p.m. officers and the Aviation Unit spotted the vehicle headed southbound on N. 40th Street.

At 10:59 p.m., officers attempted a felony traffic stop at the intersection of N. 40th Street and E. 32nd Avenue, where the suspect 2, who was the passenger, exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at officers and struck their vehicle. Officers returned fire and struck the suspect. At that time the suspect re-entered the vehicle and the driver, suspect 1, fled southbound on N. 40th Street.

At 11:00 p.m., the vehicle came to a complete stop, where the driver exited the vehicle and surrendered to officers. Suspect 2 was tactically removed from the vehicle, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to investigators, the firearm in the vehicle matched the description of the gun that the complainant originally reported.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is the lead agency in the officer-involved shooting. The State Attorney's Office has charges pending against suspect 1, the driver, which will be released at a later time.

Tampa Police detectives are currently investigating what led to the original shooting on Busch Blvd.

The officers involved have been placed on paid-administrative leave, which is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.

This remains an active investigation.
