Main Street / Old West Tampa
The commercial district at Howard and Main is one of the oldest districts in the City of Tampa, characterized by ornate architecture, a variety of uses and many assets on which to create a vibrant mixed-use center. Main Street connects the commercial center to the Hillsborough River and the emerging developments at West River. It is a vital multi-modal connection with a rich cultural heritage. The Neighborhood Commercial District Plan will establish a vision for the area and identify specific public improvements that will position the Main Street / West Tampa corridor as a vibrant, mixed used neighborhood commercial center.
The Study Area
The Main Street / West Tampa Neighborhood Commercial District Plan will address development issues along a 1-mile stretch of Main Street from North Armenia Avenue to North Boulevard. The Plan also includes the commercial center at Howard and Main and extends 0.5 mile along Howard Avenue from Green Street to Beach Street.
The Planning Process
The planning process will encompass three phases, take approximately 8 months to complete and will include broad based community engagement to ensure the Planning Team hears and understands the community issues, opportunities and values for the District.
Listening and Exploring
October 2020 – December 2020
We will use a variety of online and conference call tools to hear your ideas, concerns and hopes for a better Main Street. At the same time, our Project Team will conduct research and compile data about the corridor. At the end of this phase, we will produce a vision of a reimagined Main Street and a summary of the community issues and opportunities to achieving that vision.
Conceptual Design Development
January 2021 – March 2021
Based on the comments you provide and input from our Project Team, we will develop various conceptual design options for the future of Main Street. This may include new street layouts, possible hardscape materials, landscape design, street and pedestrian lighting, and signage and wayfinding. The concepts will also consider utility impacts, existing structures, and landscape.
April 2021 – May 2021
Based on the feedback we receive from you, we will refine the concept designs into one solution for the Main Street Neighborhood Commercial District. The plan will include a detailed implementation plan, identifying steps, actions and capital projects to be undertaken.
Now, we want to know what you think. We invite you to share your initial ideas for the future of Main Street and the neighborhood commercial district through our Main Street / West Tampa survey.
