About Us - Wastewater

Overview

Department personnel collect, treat, and dispose of more than 55 million gallons of wastewater per day from over 100,000 customers in Tampa and its immediate suburbs. To accomplish this task, the department operates and maintains an infrastructure consisting of over 1,800 miles of pipelines, 225+ pumping stations, and an advanced wastewater treatment plant with a  permitted capacity of 96 million gallons per day. The replacement cost of the total system is over $3.3 billion.

Sanitary treatment requires the careful removal of pollutants and pathogens from wastewater in a manner consistent with Federal, state, and local regulations so that the end product can be returned to the environment for natural recycling and, where available, may also be used as reclaimed water.
