Sunset Park West

Project Updates

Update #1: December 2, 2022

Below is an update on the upcoming asphalt resurfacing improvements that will impact the following streets: San Miguel, Dryad, Juno, W. Sunset, S. Venus, and S. Bryant. Repaving is expected to begin Wednesday, December 14, 2022. The contractor will work street by street to minimize the effect to residents.

Property Access and Street Side Parking

Paving crews will perform a mill and asphalt overlay procedure that requires the use of heavy machinery and materials. It is essential that all vehicles be removed off the street. Notices will be placed stating “REMOVE VEHICLES FROM CURB” as a warning that paving work will be done on your street on that particular day. Any vehicles that are not moved will be towed at your expense.

Access to residences will be maintained at all times. Your street will be re-opened to vehicle traffic as soon as the asphalt has cooled, which is typically a few hours after the asphalt is placed and compacted.

Holiday Schedule

To minimize disruption to residents, no paving activity will take place between Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26, 2022. All work will resume starting Tuesday, December 27th.

Update #2: December 8, 2022

This is a notification of water system improvements will impact the following streets: Beach Dr., Longfellow Ave., Dickens Ave. Omar Ave. and Leona Ave. Drilling and digging for this new water system installation is expected to begin Monday, December 19, 2022. The contractor will work street by street to minimize the effect to residents.

Additionally, we have changed the remediation schedule for the following streets:  S. Dundee, S. Sunset Blvd., Poe Ave., Dante Ave., and Homer Ave. Investigations of the previously installed water systems revealed many issues that still need to be resolved involving acceptable installation, certified testing, and record drawing information. The surety company and the City of Tampa have been in continuous discussions to resolve these issues but the process has taken longer than anticipated. As a result, corrective measures on these streets are now scheduled to resume in the spring of 2023.

Property Access and Street Side Parking

Work crews will be drilling HDPE pipe and digging trenches. Both procedures require the use of heavy machinery and materials. As such, it is essential that your personal vehicle be clear of construction activity. Access to residences will be maintained at all times. Your street will remain open to local and emergency vehicle traffic. Barricades and/or flaggers may be employed during the installation during daytime hours.

Holiday Schedule

To minimize disruption to residents, no repaving activity will take place between December 23-26, 2022. All work will resume starting Tuesday, December 27. Operations will also cease on January 2, 2023.

Below is a brief update on the Sunset Park West Water Main Improvements Project.

Status of Phase 1

Phase 1 stage of this project, which includes final paving for San Miguel, Dryad, Juno, W. Sunset, and S. Bryant has been delayed.

There are two main reasons for the delay. First, we needed to add a new water main along Venus Street. This replacement had not been identified on our original plans. Remediating the impacted roads in Phase 1, along with the extra work involved in adding a new water main, has extended our projected timeline for this phase. JVS Contracting is working diligently to complete their assigned tasks so that paving can be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Working Around the Holidays

The new paving schedule reflects the upcoming holidays including Thanksgiving and Christmas. The goal is to minimize disruption to residents during this time.

Next Steps

JVS Contracting will soon begin pressure testing the previously installed water mains identified in Phase 2. These streets include S. Dundee, Poe, Homer, and Dante. This pressure test is designed to confirm the integrity of the work done by the previous contractor. Pressure testing is a required process that must be completed before a water main can be placed into active service. The results of the pressure test will determine what, if any, additional remedial work may be necessary.

Please direct any questions or concerns about the work to Mr. Tim Knisely, Construction Engineer at (813) 310-5178 or Mr. Joe Rego, Construction Supervisor, at (813) 690-7893.  For project updates, visit tampa.gov/water/sunset-park-west.

The Sunset Park West Water Main Improvements Project will resume in the Sunset Park West neighborhood on September 6, 2022, with an expected completion date of June 2023, weather-permitting. The project activities include:

  • installation of new water mains and new water main tie-ins
  • installation of 32 new fire hydrants
  • roadway and right-of-way restoration once activities have been completed

The new, larger water mains along parts of W San Miguel St, W Juno St, W Dryad St, S Bryant Cir, and W Sunset Blvd will improve water pressure and flow, as well as increase fire protection. The impacted streets will be repaved with fresh asphalt.

  • What to expect during construction
  • Activities to occur within the public right-of-way
  • Staging of equipment and materials in the public right-of-way
  • Removal of landscape and hardscape from the public right-of-way
  • Vehicles parked on the street may be required to park elsewhere during construction
  • Access to homes will be maintained
  • No anticipated interruptions to trash collection / recycling or mail delivery
